Building a Skills-First Future for Gauteng’s Youth
By Andile Africa, CEO of the Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC)
As we step into 2026, the air in South Africa is thick with the promise of new beginnings. Across the country, thousands of young people are currently standing at a crossroads, making choices that will define their careers for decades to come. To the students and parents navigating the sea of enrolment forms and career paths this January: the automotive industry has evolved, opening the door to an era of unprecedented opportunity.
For a long time, the “mechanic” was viewed through a singular lens of grease. But as we move deeper into the “New Energy Vehicle” (NEV) era, the automotive sector has evolved into a high-tech frontier of digitalization, sustainability and advanced manufacturing.
The transition from Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) to NEV’s isn’t just a change in how we power our cars; it’s a total reimagining of the manufacturing value chain. We are no longer just building machines; we are building mobile computers.
At the AIDC, we are seeing a shift in the skills demanded by the market. Today’s automotive professional must be as comfortable with a laptop as they are with a torque wrench.
The industry is seeking professionals who can bridge the gap between mechanical hardware and electronic software, a new generation of automotive artisans, technicians and engineers who can manage the advanced battery systems powering our green future, while leveraging data and artificial intelligence as a means of staying globally competitive.
Our vision for 2026 is one of inclusivity. We believe that the transition to green mobility must not leave anyone behind. Through our Township Automotive Hubs, we are taking high-demand skills development programmes directly into our communities.
We aren’t just training employees; we are cultivating entrepreneurs. We want the youth of Gauteng and beyond to see themselves not just as workers on an assembly line, but as the owners of the NEV service centres and component manufacturing firms of tomorrow.
To the students enrolling in TVET colleges and universities this month: think beyond the traditional. Whether you are interested in software engineering, environmental sustainability, or precision logistics, there is a place for you in the auto industry value chain/ecosystem.
We at the AIDC are committed to ensuring that the gap between academia and industry is closed. Our partnerships with institutions like the University of Johannesburg, Tshwane University of Technology and the CSIR are designed to ensure that the certificate you earn today is the key to a job tomorrow.
The new era of automotive is green, it is digital, and it is African. To our youth: the keys to this future are in your hands. Choose a path that challenges you, equips you, and positions you at the forefront of the most exciting industrial revolution of our lifetime.
