The AIDC and Coega have today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Coega Business Centre in Gqeberha, marking a crucial step forward for the South African automotive industry. This partnership signifies a commitment to enhancing the growth and competitiveness of the sector through innovation, sustainability, and skills development.
“Today marks an important moment for the South African automotive sector,” said Andile Africa, CEO of AIDC, during the signing ceremony. “By signing this MoU, we are not just committing to collaboration, but to a shared vision of innovation and sustainability. Our joint initiatives will improve skills development and empower local SMMEs, driving our industry forward. Together, we are laying the groundwork for a competitive and resilient automotive ecosystem that can thrive in the global market, unlocking new opportunities for economic growth and job creation.”
The partnership aims to establish an Automotive Learning Centre at Coega, enhancing the capabilities of the local workforce through advanced training programmes aligned with global automotive standards. Additionally, AIDC and Coega will explore the creation of Automotive Hubs in townships to support local businesses and foster economic development in underrepresented areas. An Accelerator model for SMMEs within Coega will facilitate the setup of mini automotive component factories, connecting local SMMEs with tier-one suppliers.
According to Ms. Asanda Xawuka, Coega Executive Manager: Business Development, the partnership seeks to enhance skills development, foster innovation, improve localisation, and drive sustainable investment in the automotive sector. “We are committed to working together to upskill and train local SMMEs so they can fully exploit the current and future markets presented by developments in the sector,” she explained.
The collaboration between AIDC and Coega represents a strategic alignment of resources and expertise aimed at transforming the automotive landscape in South Africa. By pooling their strengths, both organisations are well-positioned to address industry challenges and seize emerging opportunities. As the automotive sector continues to evolve, this partnership promises to create a robust platform for all participants, from large manufacturers to local entrepreneurs, shaping a legacy of empowerment and opportunity for future generations.
